The court of first degree in Smara (Moroccan occupied Western Sahara) has condemned, today, Monday, 15 January 2007, CORELSO’s co-president, Mr. Ennaama ASFARI [left], to two months imprisonment (deferred) and a fine of 500 Moroccan Dirhams (dhs).

Mr. ASFARI , a Sahrawi human rights defender who lives in France, was arrested on 5 January and held in detention in the local prison of Smara, before giving him conditional freedom on January 12. His arrest falls under a series of intimidation and constraints of which he was victim on several occasions.

We point out that Mr. ASFARI was held and tried under false charges similar to those with which several Sahrawi activists have been charged, among them, ASVDH’s secretary general, Mr. Brahim SABBAR, and ASVDH council of coordination member Mr. SBAI Ahmed, who will appear before the court of the second degree in El-Ayoune on 23 January.
