Moroccan police attack Sahrawi activist, daughters during UNHCR-sponsored family visit

During a reception for his family coming from the Saharawi refugees camps (Tindouf), as part of the family visit program organised by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the UN Mission in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Mr. Salama Ould Mohamed Ould HAMEYA was brutally attacked by a group of Moroccan police officers today, Friday, February 22, 2008, around 14:15 GMT. Police officers also assaulted his daughters Mofida and Zahra, and other Sahrawi citizens. Zahra HAMEYA was detained for no reason and taken to the security center of the Wilaya of El-Ayoune. The police say she will be released only around 19:00 GMT. Mr. HAMEYA received at his home Mr. Najem Ould Mahmoud Ould HAMEYA and his family who had just arrived in El-Ayoune (Western Sahara) from the refugee camps near Tindouf (Algeria) under the family visit program organised by the UNHCR.
