Western Saharan political prisoner assaulted after appearing in Moroccan court

Moroccan guards beat Western Saharan political prisoner, Mr. Abderrahman ZAWAN (26 yrs, picture), as he left a Moroccan courthouse yesterday (Monday, June 9, 2008).

Moroccan occupational authorities in Western Sahara are trying Mr Zawane for allegedly participating in protests in the southern Moroccan city of Tarfaya on May 8-9, 2008.

Mr Zawane was originally detained in the Cafe Boufous in Tarfaya by ten Moroccan Royal Gendarmes who proceeded to take him out on to the street and beat him according to witnesses.

He was subsequently transferred to the Judicial Police in El-Ayoune, occupied Western Sahara.

Two other Western Saharan political prisoners were sentenced on similar charges: Mr. Abdelaziz EDDAY and Mr. Mohamed BOUSAIDI, who were imprisoned by the Moroccan court in occupied El-Ayouen on May 19, 2008.
