New arrests and intimidation against Sahrawi activists

Chaikh Amidan
The Moroccan authorities arrested Friday, at the border crossing of El Gargarat, south of Western Sahara, the former Saharawi political prisoner Chaikh Amidan. He was transferred to the city of El-Aaiun to be brought before the king’s prosecutor accused of participating in the burning of the phosphate carrier belt in the spring 2005.

In the same context the Moroccan authorities arrested yesterday, in the city of El-Aaiun, Mr Ali Salem Essouaih (22 years old) accused him of having distributed leaflets claiming the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination. He was not released until today.
Also, the family home of Amidan (which received the six young Sahraoui were prevented from traveling to London last Wednesday to take part in an international meeting) is still surrounded by the police who prevented Saharawi citizens to visit the family.
The house of Sahrawi human rights activist and vice president of CODAPSO was surrounded by the police who provoked his visitors.
