Moroccan police continue to harass, intimidate international observers in Western Sahara

10/11/2009 | Information-Update

Two international observers, Ms. Dolores Trauieso Doris and Mr Luis Mangrane, visited Mr Hassanna Duihi, member of ASVDH, around 19h50. After half an hour, Moroccan police came to his house and expelled them.

According to Mr Duihi, a group of 6 policemen in civilian clothes, headed by the officer Rabii Abdelhak, ordered the visitors to leave his home, claiming that the two Spanish lawyers are not allowed to visit the human rights defenders houses.

Mr Duihi added the he was threatened that he will be tried if he ever receives foreigners at his home.

ASVDH strongly denounces these practices committed by the Moroccan authorities, which highlight the deteriorating of the human rights situation in Western Sahara and the barriers against the Sahrawi activists working in the human rights field.

ASVDH launches an urgent appeal to international NGOs to put pressure on the Moroccan state to respect fundamental freedoms in Western Sahara.
