WFDY condemns the sentences against the Saharawis arrested after the eviction of Gdeim Izik Camp

After more than two years of pre-trial detention, the Saharawi political prisoners detained after the blood and fire eviction of the dignity camp , received judgement in the night of Sunday February 17th
The military tribunal responsible for judging them, decree eight perpetual sentences, four 30 years sentences, eight of 25 years, two others of 20 years and two others, to two years in prison already completed.
Only 7 hours of deliberation were enough to the military court to realease judgment against the Sahrawis, in a judicial process full of illegalities, legal nonsenses and manipulations, which shows the reality hidden behind the judicial theater, this is a farcical trial, not only against 24 Saharawi fighters, but against an entire people struggling for their freedom and independence.
It is remarkable that the material basis of the process has been in the declarations obtained under torture, also that the evidence submitted by the prosecution did not sustain the charges, in addition to that, the statements of witnesses are not valid by contradictory and inaccurate, also, that process flagrantly violates its own constitution as well as the international legality regarding procedural standards and humanitarian law crystallized in the IV Geneva convention having been tried in a country that is not theirs, not by a civil court and without being accompanied by some country guarantor. All these outrages have been consented by the imperialist powers in addition to the UN, being its observer mission (MINURSO) consenting to that process by not having issued an opinion against or having an appearance in court.
Based on this, from WFDY we want to show our strong condemn to the sentences issued against the Saharawi fighters, demanding their immediate release
In addition, we want to make the following considerations:
This new aggression of Morocco, along with the events of the past few months (attacks on the civilian population in the framework of the visit of UN officials, expulsion of international observers) constitutes a new turn of the screw in the occupation policy of the Moroccan kingdom characterized by the increasing of the repression, against the constant increase in the willingness of struggle of the Saharawi people in the occupied areas.
The date chosen for the trial is not casual, Morocco enjoys a strong position in the international level, within the framework of the new configuration of the Maghreb promoted by the imperialist powers, who has had its last interventionist episode in Mali, where Morocco has been one of the main sponsor.
We want to highlight the willingness of the struggle of the Saharawi people after 37 years of occupation, whose maximum exponents are the 24 militants convicted on this occasion, who without losing their dignity have suffered indescribable horror in Moroccan prisons and also have endured with militant spirit over 100 hours of trial, dressed in their traditional Sahrawi clothes and chanting songs of protest.
- We reaffirm our strong solidarity with the Saharawi people in their struggle for freedom, sovereignty and independence of Western Sahara.
- We reaffirm our support to the Polisario Front and the UJSARIO as sole representatives of the Saharawi people, as well to the human rights organizations that heroically works, day-to-day in the Occupied Territories.
We call upon WFDY member organizations to submit statements supporting the struggle of the Saharawi people and against the judgments of the Moroccan military court.
Freedom for Saharawi political prisoners!
Long Live the struggle of the Saharawi people!
