Sahrawi political prisoners on unlimited hunger strike in ‘Black Prison’

05/09/2006 | Political Prisoners

Date: 3 September 2006
Place: Civil Prison, El-Ayoune, Moroccan occupied Western Sahara

After having staged three preventive hunger strikes, the third from 16-17 August 2006, we, the Sahrawi human rights activists and political prisoners in the terrible Black Prison, will start an open-ended hunger strike from Monday, 4 September 2006, to protest the miserable situation of our detention, the inhumane treatment we endure, and to denounce the policy of indifference the Moroccan State exerts towards our legitimate rights as prisoners of opinion. We demand,

-To be kept isolated from common law criminals

-Private visitation rights for our close relations, deprived since mid-July

-To receive and send letters to the outside

-New trials

-An end to the serious violations of human rights suffered by the Sahrawi citizens and protections in accordance with international agreements and legality

-Respect for the rights of free assembly, peaceful protest, freedom of thought and expressions, free formation of associations and lifting of the media blackout imposed on the area

-The right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination in accordance with international legality.

By starting this peaceful hunger strike, we call on the activists of the Intifada of Independence and all the Sahrawi prisoners in Moroccan prisons to stay with this peaceful battle that we carry out under the slogan:

“To militate together peacefully for dignity, freedom and independence.”

We also call on human rights organizations and media institutions to support us so that we regain our legitimate rights.
