Moroccan forces repress sit-in for International Human Rights day

Date : Sunday 10 December 2006
Place : El-Ayoune, Moroccan occupied Western Sahara

On the occasion of the World Day for Human Rights, 10 December, celebrated all over the globa, ASVDH organized a sit-in in commemoration of this day. However the Moroccan repressive forces — which persist in closing the territory of Western Sahara, isolating it from the rest of the world and dening the Sahrawi population its rights — violently repressed this sit-in and used excessive force against the demonstrators.

This violent and savage intervention resulted in several victims. Among these victims are:
-Brahim DAHANE: president of ASVDH
-Elghalia DJIMI: Vice president
-Hmad HAMMAD: defender of the human rights and political ex-prisoner
-Mohamed Saleh DAILLAL: member of ASVDH

We point out that ASVDH had informed Moroccan authorities about this sit-in, in accordance with the Moroccan law. These authorities were already present in the place in advance, awaiting the demonstrators and attacking specifically members of the office of ASVDH, Brahim DAHANE and Elghalia DJIMI, as well as Hmad HAMMAD.

This savage act, falls under a repressive policy, applied throughout the territory, by the Moroccan authorities which refuse to recognize ASVDH, in spite of the decision of the administrative court which approved the legitimacy of the constitution of this organization.

Thus today’s intervention against the sit-in commemorating the world day of the human rights is not only a violation of the universal declaration of the human rights, but also a violation the Moroccan law.
