Sahrawi political prisoners attacked

03 Nov 2007 | Political Prisoners

El-Ayoune-Western Sahara

Since October 24, 2007, Sahrawi political detainees in the Black Prison of El-Ayoune have held an unlimited hunger strike. Mr. Mohamed BOUTABAA, Mr. Abdessalam LOUMADI, Mr. Hassan DAH, Mr. Nafai SAH and Mr. Abdallah ELBOUSSATI (top) are calling for their legitimate rights as Sahrawi political prisoners (i.e., the right to private visit, the right to health care and food, grouping them with other political detainees, etc.) and denounce the inhuman conditions of their detention. Other political prisoners have been on hunger strike for 48 hours in solidarity with the strikers, between the 2nd and the 3rd of November 2007.

Instead of opening a dialogue with the strikers and responding to their demands, the prison administration has started a campaign of aggression against Sahrawi political detainees. Ahmed SBAI (member of ASVDH), Mr. Ahamed Mahmoud HADDI (Elkainan), Mohamed Lehbib ELGASMI and Mr. Elhafed TOUBALI were brutally assaulted yesterday, Friday, November 2, 2007, by a special guard team known as “PARA.” Mr. HADDI (right) was placed in solitary confinement.
