Mr. Said ELBAILLAL goes on 24 hour hunger strike

Mr. Said ELBAILLAL, human rights defender, a member of CODAPSO and ASVDH, will carry out a hunger strike for 24 hours, starting from Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 8am to Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at 8am. The purpose of this strike is to demand isolation the common law detainees, and to offer him favourable conditions for further studies (Mr. ELBAILLAL is preparing his doctorate in political science), and also to take advantage of private visits and medical care.

Mr. ELBAILLAL was arrested in Smara on December 26, 2007 and imprisoned in the civil prison in Salé. Mr. ELBAILLAL, sentenced to eight months of prison and a fine of 500 dirhams, January 17, 2008, is accused of inciting riots, armed gathering and infringing upon civil servants in the performance of their duties.
